Senior Fall Prevention Volunteer Requirements
VOLUNTEER ELIGIBILITY:
Handyperson volunteers must be 18 or older, and should have skills necessary to do minor home repairs (i.e. use a level and power drill). Training will be provided to build competence in all additional skills needed.
VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS:
•A minimum of 2 jobs per month is required from each volunteer handyperson, but several volunteers do 3-4 jobs a month. Our staff is flexible with scheduling, and will only assign as many work days you feel comfortable with.
•The length of time per job varies, but it typically takes one to two hours per assignment. We typically assign two projects per work day. The total time commitment per work day should not exceed 4 hours.
•Volunteers work in pairs.
•All volunteers must complete RT training before going on assignments alone.
•All Senior Fall Prevention Service (SFPS) volunteers must have a criminal background check prior to volunteering.
•Volunteers are required to have their own transportation, current driver license, and appropriate auto insurance.
•Mileage is reimbursed if requested.
MORE THAN JUST FALL PREVENTION:
Volunteers are encouraged to participate in conversation with the homeowner. Some of our older clients are lonesome and your kindness will go a long way.
TRAINING:
All new volunteers are required to complete at least one on-site visit with the SFPS coordinator, or veteran volunteer. If volunteers wish to have additional training before they “graduate” this can provided. Every other month we host a volunteer luncheon or breakfast to share best practices between volunteers and staff.
